For more than 30 years, Georgia Strait Alliance has been leading advocacy efforts for the protection of the Salish Sea and all the beings that call this region home.

Our mission and vision:

Grounded in environmental justice, we mobilize and support collective action to protect the Salish Sea region, envisioning a future where the Salish Sea teems with life, where thriving and just communities live in balance with the environment.

Reducing boating pollution:

Through our Clean Marine BC eco-certification program we provide education and resources to boaters and boating facilities to reduce pollution in the Salish Sea and promote good marine stewardship.

Protecting biodiversity:

We protect endangered species such as the Southern Resident orca and wild salmon and their habitat from environmental threats such as oil spills, wastewater, and industrial expansion. We do this through advocacy, education, legal action and grassroots organizing.

Marine planning:

By using a watershed-based approach in protecting BC’s coastal waters, our new program focuses on marine planning within the Salish Sea and prioritizes community engagement in these processes.

Supporting climate action

We work to support communities that protect each other and build a climate-resilient future based on sustainable energy, by supporting collective action on issues of local concern.

Cause

The Salish Sea is one of the most biologically rich ecosystems in the world with over 3,000 species, including 125 at risk species, such as Southern Resident orcas and wild salmon. At the same time, there are 2.7 million people living in South Coast BC who are affected by the health of the ocean, including residents, industries, Coast Salish First Nations, tourists, and boaters.

These diverse communities of people, wildlife and habitats are impacted in different ways by the many environmental threats facing the Salish Sea. Urbanization, industrial mega projects, open-pen fishing, and the broader climate crisis are all putting pressure on ecosystems and communities in the Salish Sea region.

Through education, advocacy, legal action, we mobilize collective action to protect the Salish Sea.

Help us protect the Salish Sea for future generations by supporting our Explore the Salish Sea raffle! Thank you!
